Introduction

This guide is for performing an on-premise virtual machine Protection via the Cloudist VDC user interface.

These steps are also applicable for performing migrations via the VMware Cloud Director Availability extension for your on-prem vSphere environment.

Prerequisites

You must be onboarded in the Cloudist Solutions Portal and have:

  • A provisioned Virtual Data Center via the Cloudist VDC service

  • Your customer/organization number

  • Your username and password

  • You must have deployed the VMware Cloud Director Availability On-premises Appliance

    • You have Allow Access from Cloud selected

Procedure

The Cloudist VDC Availability interface can also be reached directly via the following urls - Sites can be managed asynchronously.

Login details for these are your Cloudist Solutions Portal username@customer/org numer and password.

  • Select the Region you would to migrate to and click on Log in to VDC

    • The steps are the same for any region

  • Once logged into your VDC, click More, then Availability (SEN1-AZ1-VCDA1)

  • Go to Incoming Replications, then From On-Premises

  • Click on the New protection icon

  • Ensure Source Site and Select VMs to replicate from correspond with your correct on-prem environment

  • Select a VM to replicate and click Next

  • Choose the Cloudist VDC you would like to migrate to

  • Choose the Storage Policy the virtual machine should reside on, then click Next

  • Choose an appropriate SLA profile for the replication

  • Choose whether to Exclude disks that are not required for replication

  • Choose to whether to Configure Seed VMs if you have perhaps an already replicated older copy

  • Review the Ready To Complete summary and click Finish to begin the first replication

  • Observe the progress of the replication

Initiating a Failover

Once the first replication has completed, further replications will continue as definid by the chosen SLA Profile.

If or when the time comes to fail over the virtual machine:

  • Select the correct virtual machine and click on the Fail Over icon (available also via All Actions menu

  • Choose whether to

    • Consolidate VM disks

    • Power on the VM

    • Connect to a VCD network or keep preconfigured settings

  • Choose a recovery instance to failover from and click Next

Numerous recovery instances will be available based on the SLA Profile you have chosen and the length of time the protection job has ran for

  • Review the summary and click Finish to complete

During a failover the assumption is that the source VM is no longer available. The failover job will not attempt to shut down the source VM

  • Observe the progress of the failover

  • Once completed, go back to Data Centers and the target VDC and find the failed over virtual machine
