Getting started - Creating a virtual machine with an integrated router/firewall

Introduction

This guide will assist in creating a Windows server vm, router and security groups for internet access with our VDC integrated solution.

Prerequisites

To begin this procedure you must have an onboarded Domain, user account with at least Project User access and a created Project.

Logging in

 

  • Log into https://sec1-vdc2.cloudist.solutions:8800/login/

  • Locate the required Project and select it

Creating a Network

 

  • Click on the Compute icon in the left hand menu pane, select Networks and then Create Network

  • Name the Network and click Next to proceed

  • Configure a subnet by clicking Add, IPv4 subnet

  • Enter a CIDR, Gateway, Allocation pool, DNS servers. Click Add

  • Click Next, review your configuration and then select Create virtual network to apply

  • Review that your network has been created

Creating a Router

 

  • Click on the Compute icon in the left hand menu pane, select Routers and then Add Router

  • Give your Router a name

  • In the Network field select public 194.103.192.0/24

  • In the Add internal interfaces field select the network you created previously

  • Click Create

  • Observe that your Router has been created

  • Click on the Router name and observe the allocated IP addresses

Creating a Security Group

 

  • When creating your Project a default Security Group is also created

  • Click onto the default security group and observe the rule-set. Everything is allowed Inbound and Outbound.

  • Delete the Inbound rules using the trash can icons to the right of the rules, leaving the Outbound as-is

Creating a Virtual Machine

 

  • Click on the Compute icon in the left hand menu pane, select Virtual Machines and then Create virtual machine

  • Give the virtual machine a Name and select Deploy from: Image

  • Choose an Image with the edit pen icon to the right of the row

  • Choose an Image from the list. Images ending in - Cloudist are pre built, licensed and updated by Cloudist. Click Done

  • Edit the Volume with the edit pen icon to the right of the row

  • Click on the three dots menu to the right of the row of the Boot volume

  • You can adjust the Boot volume size if required

  • Choose one of the ALL-FLASH storage profiles that suits your needs

    • ALL-FLASH Basic: 250 IOPS

    • ALL-FLASH Standard: 750 IOPS

    • ALL-FLASH Premium: Unlimited

  • Click Save to apply

  • Click Done

  • Choose a Flavour with the edit pen icon to the right of the row

  • Select a Flavour and click Done

  • Choose a Network interface with the edit pen icon to the right of the row

  • Click Add

  • Select the Demo-Network created earlier

  • Review the Add Network Interface configuration. Since we created a pool on the network earlier an IP Address will automatically be assigned from that. Assign one manually if preferred, within the network CIDR

  • Choose a Security Group if not using the default group modified earlier, which will allow all outbound traffic, restricting all inbound traffic.

  • Click Add

  • Click Done

  • Review the Create Virtual Machine configuration and click Deploy to proceed

  • Observe that the Virtual Machine has created, is in an active state and has allocated an IP address

  • Click onto the Virtual Machine and click Console

  • Log into the server and test internet connectivity
